Select text in any Mac app, press ⌘⇧E and say what should change. Or select nothing and say what to write, and it lands at your cursor. ⌘Z undoes either.

Subject: Dinner
Hi Maya,
I'm so sorry, I can't make it to dinner tomorrow. Could we do Sunday instead?
Thanks for understanding, and say hi to Leo for me.

The problem
Most AI writing help lives in a chat window. You leave your app, paste the text in, copy the answer out and clean up the formatting it broke.
Apple's built-in rewriting needs Apple Intelligence: Apple silicon, macOS 15.1 or later and a supported language. Intel Macs, and Macs on macOS 13 or 14, are left out.
How it works
Redraft waits in your menu bar until you press ⌘⇧E, or any shortcut you pick. What happens next depends on whether you selected anything.
Either way, your app's ⌘Z undoes it, and every result is kept in History.
Why Redraft
Run a model on your Mac with LM Studio, or use your own key. You pay your provider directly, or nothing at all locally.
Add "use web search" to an instruction. Sources are saved in History, never pasted into your text.
Web search uses OpenRouter.
Find an earlier version or copy a result again. Turn History off any time.
Built in AppKit. Liquid Glass on macOS 26, native materials on older versions. It lives in the menu bar as an owl in reading glasses, and its eyes move while it works.
Pricing
Yes. Redraft is free to download and use. If you choose a cloud model, your provider bills you directly for what you use. Local models through LM Studio cost nothing.
Only if you choose a cloud model. Then the selected text and your instruction go from your Mac straight to that provider, for that one request, and Redraft asks the first time. With a local model, nothing leaves your Mac. If you add "use web search", the search provider sees the request too.
A Mac on macOS 13 Ventura or later, Intel or Apple silicon. Then either LM Studio for a local model, or an API key from OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic or DeepSeek.
Writing Tools needs Apple Intelligence, so it isn't on Intel Macs or on macOS 13 and 14. Redraft runs on those Macs, lets you choose the model, and can search the web when you ask. If you have Writing Tools and it does what you need, keep using it.
No. Click where you want the text, press ⌘⇧E with nothing selected and describe what to write: a reply, a reminder, a list. Redraft pastes it at your cursor.
Apps where you can select and edit text: Mail, Notes, Pages, Messages, team chat, your browser and more. If an app won't let Redraft replace the text safely, the result goes to your clipboard so you can paste it yourself.
Press ⌘Z in your app to get the original back. Every result is also kept in History, so you can copy an earlier version.
Yes, with a local model in LM Studio. Cloud models and web search need a connection.
It's the one permission Redraft needs, to read your selection and paste the result for you. It's only used when you press the shortcut.
Free, private by design, and on every Mac from macOS 13. Download Redraft, select some text (or none) and press ⌘⇧E.
